Top Selling Aerial Drones

Top Selling Aerial Drones

When it comes to aerial drones for individual use, there are quite a few manufacturers who have come to market.  However, for the money, DJI arguably has the best line of aerial drones for serious drone enthusiasts.  There are a number of factors that set the DJI Phantom drones apart from their competitors:

  • Longer fly times (up to 25 minutes for the Phantom 2).
  • Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC).
  • Greater range of control (over 980 feet).
  • Fail-safe functionality to return to launch position if transmission signal is lost.
  • Advanced GPS positioning that compensates for light wind.
  • Compatibility with top action cameras (like GoPro Hero series).
  • Unmatched stability and maneuverability.
  • Plenty of power (great lift and max horizontal speed of 22 mph).

If you’re just a novice or are looking for a remote controlled “toy” for your kids, you may not want to invest in a DJI Phantom drone.  Also, if you want something for indoor use, this is not the drone for you — check out the less expensive Parrot drones HERE.

However, if you’re looking for a sturdy, professional quality drone with long battery life, stable flight, intuitive control via your Apple iOS or Android device and the ability to take high quality video and pictures, you should really consider the DJI Phantom line of drones.

Top Rated Drones for Aerial Photography:

The DJI Phantom drone is quickly becoming one of the favorite drones for capturing high-quality aerial footage of nature, sporting events, outdoor activities, surveillance, etc.  Below, I will give you an overview of the features of the following DJI Phantom Quadcopters:

  • DJI Phantom Aerial UAV Drone Quadcopter for GoPro

  • DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter

  • DJI Phantom 2 Vision Quadcopter with Integrated FPV Camcorder

  • DJI Phantom 2 Vision+

DJI Phantom Aerial UAV Drone Quadcopter for GoPro

If you’ve already got a GoPro camera, you can get a base DJI Phantom drone which is equipped to work with the Hero2, Hero3 and Hero3+ models.  This drone has all of the same capabilities of the Vision and Vision+ models, but comes without the camera or additional upgrades like the camera gimbal for additional stability and independent camera control.

The Phantom 2 models have improved propellers which enable up to 25 minutes of flight on a fully charged battery (as opposed to only 15 minutes for the Phantom), but the Phantom is still a great base Quadcopter if you’ve already got a mountable camera or if you’re not concerned with taking aerial photos.

DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter

The DJI Phantom 2 costs about $80 to $100 more than the DJI Phantom for two primary reasons:

  • Improved propeller and battery design for longer flight times (up to 28 minutes)
  • Comes equipped with circuit board needed to attach separate, optional Zen Muse H3-2D camera gimbal.

DJI Phantom 2 Vision Quadcopter with Integrated FPV Camcorder

This version of the DJI Phantom 2 comes with its own built-in 14MP 1080p FVP (i.e., First Person View) camcorder which can store video to an on-board SD card or stream it live (via WiFi) to your iOS or Android device (via the free Vision app).  The built in camera has an integrated tilt motor which automatically adjusts to the motion of the drone, producing more stable video.

It should be noted that the other models of the DJI Phantom, using the GoPro cameras, do not support streaming data via WiFi, since it has the potential of creating interference with the control signal.  So, if live, streaming video is important to you, this model with the Integrated FPV Camcorder may be the one for you.

 DJI Phantom 2 Vision+

This is my personal favorite model:  arguably the best drone for aerial photography in its price range.

Like the Phantom 2 Vision in every other way, the Vision+ model comes equipped with a 3-axis gimbal supporting maximum control and mobility of the integrated 1080p video camera with Wi-Fi first-person-view (FPV) on your iOS or Android device.  This model is already being heavily used by extreme sports enthusiasts, film-makers and aviation hobbyists alike to take to the skies and capture amazing aerial footage.

Tips & Recommendations:

  • I recommend ordering at least one spare battery so that you can limit your down time.  The batteries are easy to swap out, so if you’ve always got a charged battery you’ll be less likely to miss any of the action.
  • I also recommend purchasing the optional prop guards.  These help prevent injury due to inadvertent contact with the rotors and also help protect the rotors in the event of a rough landing.
  • Make sure to read the operating instructions carefully and familiarize yourself with any local regulations before taking to the skies.

Summary:

I hope that this overview has helped you if you are in the market for a high quality drone with which to take amazing aerial photos and videos.  The DJI Phantom earns its rank as one of the top rated drones in its class.  Please leave your comments and/or questions below and sign up for the Family Staples newsletter so that you can receive new posts and reviews in your email.
